How we review
Every review, comparison and best-of list on this site applies the same criteria to the same kinds of evidence. This page is the methodology — the part most affiliate sites hope you won't ask about.
What we analyze
- Routes — published loop coverage, the corridors served, and how coverage compares across operators.
- Published ticket details — tier structures, what each tier includes, and how clearly the operator communicates it.
- Schedules and frequency — what operators state about operating hours and bus frequency, the variable that most shapes the hop-on hop-off experience.
- Included attractions — what a ticket actually covers versus what buses merely pass.
- Accessibility — operator-published accessibility information.
- Policies — cancellation, refund and child-fare terms as published.
- Value — the relationship between all of the above and prevailing pricing, assessed structurally rather than against any single day’s price.
- Firsthand testing, when available — where a page reflects an actual ride, it says so explicitly in the text. We never imply firsthand testing that didn’t happen.
The six rating criteria
Each reviewed product is scored 0–5 on: Route Coverage, Value, Convenience, Commentary, Frequency and Family Friendliness. The overall score is the simple average. These are BusTourNYC editorial ratings: our judgments, applied consistently, from the evidence above. They are not consumer review aggregates, and we never present them as such.
What our ratings don’t claim
- They don’t claim to reflect any individual rider’s experience on any given day.
- They don’t incorporate paid placement — operators cannot buy scores or positions.
- They don’t freeze reality: products change, and each review shows when it was last verified.
Prices: why we link instead of print
NYC tour pricing shifts by season, promotion and sales channel. Numbers republished on a third-party site are stale by design. Our pages describe pricing structure and link to live prices — where we give an indicative range, it’s dated and hedged, and the live page always wins.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix the page and update its modified date. Report anything — big or small — via the contact page.
